Beaver Hills Retreat was purchased in the spring of 2000 with the goal of turning the 40-acre property into a wildlife sanctuary. Through years of hard work, the landscape transformed into a thriving habitat for birds and wildlife. Mass tree planting and birdhouse installations have attracted a diverse array of wildlife, positively impacting the local ecosystem.
In 2015, the retreat was certified as a “Wildlife Friendly Habitat” by The Canadian Wildlife Federation. A testament to the many years of dedication in providing a safe and welcoming environment for all creatures great and small. Beaver Hills Retreat is extremely grateful for the opportunity to play a part in preserving the natural beauty of the surroundings as it continues to create a sustainable habitat for wildlife to thrive.

Dinner Time - Purple Martin Male
Birding season at this private nature retreat near Edmonton, Alberta is absolutely incredible! With a 24-year-old Purple Martin colony that fledges 250-300 young annually, and families of Bohemian Waxwings, Robins, Hummingbirds, House Finches, and tree Swallows, there’s so much to see! The untouched 9-acre meadow is perfect for ground nesters, and the wetlands are teeming with waterfowl. It’s an exciting opportunity to witness the beauty and diversity of Alberta’s bird species in action.

It’s truly amazing to witness the regions wildlife thriving year after year. Beaver Hills Retreat has observed moose, deer and coyotes and even spotted a black bear and fisher cat in 2023! This is not to mention the wolves and elk known to be in the area with reported cougar sightings in Elk Island National Park! It truly is a labor of love creating a habitat where these animals not only flourish but thrive. As Albert Einstein quoted “Look deep into nature and you will understand everything better”.

Turning Back the Hands of Time
Located on the edge of the Beaver Hills UNESCO Biosphere, Beaver Hills Retreat acquired its name naturally.
While looking over the endless rolling hills and lush green terrain it is hard to imagine that ten thousand years ago Beaver Hills Retreat was buried under a layer of ice over one kilometer thick! When the glacier ice melted and shifted it forever changed the landscape. You will find many of the deposited boulders strategically placed around the retreat, a lush boreal forest and a 4 acre wetland rich with wildlife.
