Our life Journey and Labour of Love
The conservation of our migratory birds and the land in which they call home – Beaver Hills Retreat
A Field of Dreams
The day we purchased our 40 acre parcel of land we knew we had our work cut out for us. The site consisted of a mobile home in the middle of an empty field with a couple old outbuildings and very few trees. It truly was a diamond in the rough.
In 2001 we started planting trees and installed our first Purple Martin house. To this day we continue to add to the habitat as we have since the day we planted our first tree.
Fast forward 24 years later the Retreat is lush with hundreds of domesticated deciduous and evergreen greens. The vast majority of our trees including Colorado Blue, White Spruce and Siberian Larch were started as seedlings and now tower between 15 – 30 feet! The 12 compartment Purple Martin house has grown to 48 nest cavities with future plans to add more.
One gorgeous spring morning in 2003 a Purple Martin Scout laid claim to the site. Thanks to that Scout a healthy and thriving colony embark in the long journey from South America to BHR each and every year!
In 2023 we added an additional 50 boxes for cavity nesters such as Bluebirds, Tree Swallows & House Wrens to name but a few.
Kevin Costner nailed it. “Build it and they will come” and KEEP coming. BHR is abundantly blessed with hundreds of beautiful birds!

Turning Back The Hands of Time
Located on the edge of the Beaver Hills UNESCO Biosphere, Beaver Hills Retreat acquired its name naturally.
While looking over the endless rolling hills and lush green terrain it is hard to imagine that ten thousand years ago Beaver Hills Retreat was buried under a layer of ice over one kilometer thick! When the glacier ice melted and shifted it forever changed the landscape. You will find many of the deposited boulders strategically placed around the retreat, a lush boreal forest and a 4 acre wetland rich with wildlife.
Come on out, breathe some fresh country air and let Mother Nature work her magic.
